Engineering

This qualification covers the principles of engineering, engineering workshop practice and working in the engineering business. You will gain an understanding of the welding processes and how to weld. You will also learn how to use fabrication equipment and perform cutting. There is employer involvement in projects, as part of the qualification.

  • Entry requirements

    Minimum GCSE are grade 2 in four subjects, including Mathematics, Science, English Language, Design Technology. You will need an assessment and interview and must be motivated, committed and have a positive attitude.

  • Who is the course for?

    This qualification is suitable if you want to work in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. If you like to explore how simple components and complex machines are designed, made or maintained and are keen to develop practical, technical skills and wish to follow a pathway of fabrication and welding.

  • Study methods

    Combination of lectures and workshop sessions, tutorials, private study projects and assignments.

  • How is the course assessed?

    To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments: One externally set, externally moderated assignment
    One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions.

  • More information

    All students will have to provide appropriate personal protective equipment (overalls and safety boots at approximately £70). You will also need to buy a calculator.

    Apprenticeship or progression to Level 3.
