Over 2 years, learners will study a number of mandatory units to develop the skills required within the health and social care sector as well as optional units that focus on specialist areas of work within health and social care.
You will also undertake a work placement in a relevant setting during your period of study.

Entry requirements
5 GCSEs (including English and Maths, at grade 4 or above). A GCSE in science is also desirable, depending on your progression preferences, eg. nursing, midwifery and radiology etc.

Who is the course for?
This course is for students who wish to acquire skills and knowledge to prepare them for working in the health and social care sector.
Within the course you will gain knowledge and understanding of a wide range of subject areas relating to health and social care, involving; children, adults, the elderly and people with additional needs.
You will spend some of your time in a range of work related placements. -
Study methods
All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on Level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study the Extended Diploma qualification over a 2 year period.
All units and exams must be successfully completed in order to gain the full qualification.
In addition to the coursework units, there are also 6 exams in total, with 4 externally marked exams in year 1 and 2 externally marked exams in year 2, and these are:- Anatomy and Physiology
- Health, Safety and Security
- Safeguarding
- Equality and Diversity
Personalisation and Person Centered Care (Year 2)
Research Methods (Year 2).

How is the course assessed?
Coursework is continually assessed through regular assignments.
These will be in various formats, such as; written projects, individual and group presentations or discussions.
You will also be required to complete a meaningful work placement in a voluntary capacity (for a minimum of 100 hours), to support and underpin your study and deepen your developing knowledge. -
Where Next – Job Opportunities
An Extended Diploma in Health and Social care provides such a breadth of skills and knowledge that some students go straight into employment which can include areas such as: care support work, health work, childcare or advice and assistance work within the sector.
The skills that this course develops are in great demand and are recognised by employers and universities as being of significant value in young people. -
Where Next – Further Studies
Successful completion will award you approximately 312 UCAS points, should you wish to progress into higher education or university.
You will learn, develop and use a variety of transferable skills, that support a range of degree pathways, throughout the course. These include:- Effective communication skills
- Collecting, analysing and interpreting data
- Communicating your findings in different ways.
You will also develop skills that will enable you to identify and develop links between different aspects and subject specialisms, as well as improve both your personal and professional reflective skills.
Successful completion of the extended diploma can lead to a higher level apprenticeship, university degree, or to employment within the sector and beyond.
If choosing to progress onto university, you can choose to study subjects such as: Nursing, Midwifery, Psychology, Social Work, Therapy or related areas of study at university or other institutions.
