The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences (Forensic Science) offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, a unit specialism which is pathway dependent and an optional unit of study; allowing for the acquisition of skills and experience across a range of occupational sectors at Level 4.

The units that are taught for the Forensic Science pathway are:

  1. Fundamentals of laboratory techniques (core)
  2. Scientific data handling approaches and techniques (core)
  3. Regulation and quality in the applied sciences (Pearson-set)(core)
  4. Cell biology (core)
  5. Fundamentals of biochemistry (core)
  6. CriminaliInvestigation (core)
  7. Volume crime scene science (optional)
  8. Undertake forensic examinations at scenes of incidents (optional).

    The units that are taught for the biotechnology/biology pathway are:
  9. Fundamentals of laboratory techniques (core)
  10. Scientific data handling approaches and techniques (core)
  11. Regulation and quality in the applied sciences (Pearson-set)(core)
  12. Cell biology(Core)
  13. Fundamentals of chemistry (core)
  14. Anatomy and human physiology
  15. Microbiological techniques (optional)
  16. Sampling and sample preparation (optional).

    The course is semester-based with a mixture of blended learning to allow you to complete the qualification in a flexible manner. The course will be timetabled on Thursday and Fridays, which you will be expected to attend either remotely or in person. However, there will be some Thursdays and Fridays that we will be expect you to attend in person in order that you get the support you need to achieve at your full potential.
  • Entry requirements

    Formal entry requirements may include:
    A BTEC Leve 3 qualification in any Science based area

    An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further Education institution

    An international equivalent of the above

    Other related Level 3 qualifications

    IELTS of at least 6.

      This course is for those who wish to persue higher education in the forensic science field. This is ideal for those wishing to start a new career in this field, or those already working in this area who wish to advance their careers with higher education.
  • Study methods

    Teaching methods will include 1-2-1 sessions, lecturers, practical sessions in a laboratory and blended learning.

    You will be taught in specialist laboratories that are well equipped. You will also have access to computers where you can carry out research and test your theories from the evidence you retrieve. You will need to dedicate at least 10 hours a week outside the classroom to research and complete assignments.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Each unit is assessed through assignment work that covers the assessment criteria for that unit. For each assessment criteria you need to submit evidence that you now have that piece of knowledge or skill. Your overall performance across all the assignments in that unit is then judged to see whether you get a Pass, Merit or Distinction for that unit.

    The grades you get for each unit are then awarded points which when added up match the score of an overall grade for your qualification.

      For students to be eligible for funding from Student Finance England, they must be studying on an eligible course at a provider registered with the Office for Students (OfS).   • Where Next – Further Studies

    This course leads to HND Applied Science or Forensic Science.
    Alternatively, you could top up your qualification to a degree at a range of universities. The point of entry (e.g. second or third year of a degree) will depend on the chosen institution, modules studied and the grades achieved at HNC.

  • Fees

    Home student fee: £6,500

    International student fee: £8,500. There is also a registration fee for international students. This is between £115-25.

    The fees quoted are for one year of study and include tuition, exam fee, materials, ID card (which gives access to the college and facilities e.g. library) and college registration.

    Fees will be no higher than those published, subject to an Access and Participation Plan being approved by the Office for Students.

    Whether you pay a 'home' or 'overseas' fee depends on whether you meet certain criteria. Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) does not create the criteria for fee status. The fee status criteria is provided in regulations and guidance, published by the government.
