Foundation Learning & Skills for Life

This is a course that gives learners a taste of different vocational subjects such as Art and Design, Sport, Public Services and IT.

It is perfect for learners who have not yet decided which subject area they would like to study.

On completion of the course, learners can progress to a Level 2 qualification in one of these subject areas.

The study programme is made up of the following strands:

  • OCNL Level 1 Award in Vocational Skills GCSE or Functional Skills Maths and English Work Placement (36 hours minimum)
  • Focused tutorials around employability vocational units in Social Media, How the Body Works, Taking Part in Sport and Study Skills.
  • Entry requirements

    You should have an interest in the subject area you are applying for. There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and Maths to make sure you are working at Entry Level 3 or above. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

  • Who is the course for?

    This course is aimed at students who are interested in boosting their English, Maths and vocational skills. It is also relevant for students who want to progress onto a Level 2 vocational course or employment the following year.

  • Study methods

    Study methods include lectures, practical workshops and research. This course will allow students the opportunities to develop skills in a variety of different areas within the College.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Candidates complete units to collect a portfolio of evidence.

    Assessment consists of both performance and knowledge evidence. Performance evidence is through direct observation of the candidate, products or outcomes of the candidate’s work, such as items that have been produced or worked on.

    Maths and English will be assessed through exams.

    Applications for a place on this course in Supported Learning require the young person to be in receipt of an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    Students may progress onto a Level 2 course, supported internships or employment.
