Foundation Learning & Skills for Life

These are the qualifications you will gain if you successfully complete the course:

  • OCNLR Level 1 Award in Progression
  • Functional skills English
  • Functional skills Maths
  • Functional skills IT

    The course is designed to help you to identify your own strengths and weaknesses, as well looking at your long term goals and how to achieve them.

    As part of the course, you will be studying units in customer service and team working skills. Cooking and photography also form part of the programme of study. Through the tutorial sessions, you will have several visits from outside speakers and agencies.

    Your experience of the work place will be used to contribute to various parts of the course. As the course progresses you may decide to undertake additional work experience placements as you build your CV and advance towards your goals.

    A feature of the course is the importance placed on practical experience and visits outside the classroom to research aspects of the world of work.
  • Entry requirements

    You should have an interest in the subject area you are applying for. There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and maths to make sure you are working at Entry Level 3 or above. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

  • Who is the course for?

    This one year course is for students aged 16-18 who are working at/or around Entry Level 3 and is intended to offer support in finding a job or guidance into more specialised vocational training.

    You need to be motivated to undertake a course that could enable you to get a job in the near future. You will need to be able to show from your previous experience that you could benefit from the course.

    You will need to show that you have mature outlook, that you are able to work with a degree of responsibility and that you have commitment to full time education. Students come to this course from many different backgrounds and all can do very well.

  • Study methods

    As part of the course students will undertake two or three different work experience placements. Most students will progress on to more specialised training before gaining a job. They will have the opportunity to gain an OCNLR Level 1 Award in Progression as well as certificates in Functional Skills English, Maths and IT.

  • How is the course assessed?

    You will complete a series of assessed assignments throughout the course, together with more formal tests in literacy, numeracy and IT. As part of the course you will be asked to give an oral presentation on your work placements and what you have learned from them.

  • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    The course will give you the chance to investigate a number of possible different jobs and to help you understand the kind of work that you would like to do. It could help you get employment at the end of the course including help with interview technique and the completion of a CV.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    You may want to progress onto another course such as specialised training in catering, construction or sport.

  • Fees

    Cooking: £30 per term. Course resources including printing and photocopying: £30 per year.
