Comic Con Gavin and KaiRichmond upon Thames College (RuTC) celebrated its third annual Comic Con event on the 2nd of April. This was a chance for students and staff to come together to celebrate their love of comic books and science fiction culture, and to champion their creativity.

To kick off the day, Principal Gavin Hughes and Assistant Principal Kai Barnes welcomed students to college in their Mario and Luigi outfits, complete with office chair go-karts. Students were then given a scare by our reception team of Nicky Ross and Victoria Davies, who came dressed as The Guards from Squid Game.

Comic Con StudentsPlenty of fun-filled activities took place throughout the day, including an outdoor gaming bus and ice cream van, a Mario Kart tournament and screening of the Nintendo Switch launch in our Immersive Room, the masked singer/teacher, and the much-anticipated cosplay runway competitions.

In the morning, we welcomed David Haddon from Sony PlayStation to share his story and wisdom with aspiring gamers and students alike. It was a wonderful opportunity to inspire students and give them a real insight into what their futures could look like if they choose to follow a similar path.

Comic Con RunwayOur lunchtime cosplay costume competition gave dressed-up students the chance to strut their stuff down the runway in our auditorium, showing off their amazing costumes to fellow students and staff. Five runners up were named, with A-Level student Ella Brooks, and Aaliyah Alibo coming out on top! Both students won tickets to the upcoming MCM Comic Con event at ExCel London for their efforts.

Staff members also put in a huge effort with their brilliant costumes. In the afternoon runway competition, first prize was given to Shona Corben, dressed as Luigi; the three runners-up were Kirsty Mclean, Lisette Barlow, and Rhys Slyfield, Christina Button and Anastasia Di-Modugno, who entered as a group. First prize vouchers were kindly donated by The Crane Tap for the third year in a row.

Comic Con CaitOur Student Services team, headed by Student Experience Manager Cait Orton, along with dedicated staff members across the college worked exceptionally hard to create an outstanding event for communities across the college to participate in. Huge congratulations to all involved in making the whole day such a success!
